A Guide to the Psychology of Anger Management
The term anger management refers to a system of various different psychological therapeutic techniques that someone who has anger problems can use to control or reduce the triggers that affect or aggravate their anger. There are basic anger management techniques such as deep breathing and meditation, which are both commonly used, however each person’s case is different and thus their recommended form of treatment will be different as well.
The psychology of anger management is quite complex, and what is considered as being the psychology of anger management today differs quite greatly from what was a few decades ago.
The Psychology of Anger Management
In modern society, anger is an emotion which is viewed as being a response to frustration, threat or loss, and anger can also aggravate other existing health problems, especially depression. People who are depressed tend not to take care of themselves and if anger enters the mix it often ends up being a dangerous combination.
There are two different types of anger that are noted in the psychology of anger management, which are: passive anger and aggressive anger. Passive anger tends to be expressed with secretive behavior, manipulation, self-blame, self-sacrifice, obsessive behavior and evasiveness. Passive anger is often much less recognized because it is often so much more subtle, however it can be just as dangerous as aggressive anger, especially if left untreated.
Aggressive anger has very different symptoms, such as threatening, hurtful or destructive behavior, bullying, unjustly blaming, and selfish, revengeful or unpredictable actions. Although anyone displaying these behaviors does not necessarily have an anger problem, odds are that they do and either way it is important that they seek professional help as soon as possible in order to attain a proper assessment of their condition.
In the psychology of anger management there are various methods of anger management that are used, one in particular being passionate, such as using full power of the body in order to show intensity of feeling, and of being excited and motivated. Forgiveness is another big issue here, as in order to be able to properly deal with any issues you may have, including anger, you have to be able to forgive yourself.
Anger is a very serious issue, and if you do have an anger problem you need to recognize it and then deal with it properly and promptly.
