A Young Gentleman Hits Rock Bottom, Prevails Over His Depression, Gets Alcohol Treatment for His Abusive Drinking, and Fortifies His Self Esteem
Samuel was a thirty-seven-year-old photographer who was tired of feeling depressed on a daily basis and sick of his abusive and unhealthy drinking behavior. Stated briefly, he was angry with himself for spending his hard-earned money on a worthless habit, he was tired of going through broken relationship after broken relationship due to his irresponsible drinking, he was sick of feeling tired every morning, he hated the hangovers he went through on a regular basis, and he missed his old drive for doing various things he enjoyed.
In addition he was annoyed with the many times he failed an alcohol test at his workplace, he was bored with his drinking friends, he despised the fact that he had to go to court for his first DUI, he was upset with how physically unfit he was, and he was fed up with paying for alcohol-related lawyer fees.
In addition to the noticeable alcohol-related health predicaments he was experiencing, in all probability the unhealthiest part of his drinking behavior was the untrustworthy and deceitful person he had turned into. In his heart he knew that he had been less than honest about his drinking behavior to his relatives, family, and friends and he also knew he had been untruthful with himself about the “healthy” outcomes of drinking. Not only this but he justified guzzling four or five drinks before going to social events and he also justified needing a few drinks as soon as he got up so that he could deal with the “stress” at his job.
His Depression and His Abusive and Irresponsible Drinking Result in Major Life Changes
Clearly Samuel was sick of putting up with the negative effects of his depression and his careless drinking and eventually made up his mind that something significant had to change in his life. So he made up his mind that he would refrain from drinking, start exercising, involve himself in some worthwhile hobbies, get professional counseling, start focusing on becoming a more healthy person, and develop a new circle of friends.
Stated simply, Samuel got to a key moment in his life during which he understood that he hit a low point in life and was now ready to start the slow and gradual path that leads to recovery.
One of the ways that Samuel put his “plan” into action was by asking for a transfer at his workplace. When his request was approved, he moved 750 miles away to a new state. If nothing else, this absolutely made making new friends and detaching himself from his old friends and buddies simpler. Then he contacted a healthcare professional in his new city and made an appointment for a complete physical exam.
Samuel Meets With a Healthcare Professional About His Irresponsible Drinking and His Depression
After meeting with the doctor and taking a number of lab tests, it was concluded that Samuel had crossed the line from alcohol abuse to alcohol addiction and therefore was in need of alcohol detox and alcohol treatment. At this time, the physician made it a point to review the different signs of alcoholism, the symptoms of alcoholism, and information about long term effects of alcohol with Samuel.
The physician then told Samuel that it was decided that he was clinically depressed and in need of counseling for this medical issue.
Samuel Makes up His Mind to Build Up His Body by Living an Alcohol-Free Lifestyle, Eating Nutritious Foods, Drinking Filtered Water, Taking Vitamins and Minerals, and Going to the Gym
Due to his enthusiasm for following through with the rehabilitation program, after six weeks of inpatient rehab, Samuel was ready to begin rehab on an outpatient basis. At this point, he began working at his new job and over the weeks began fortifying his body by living an alcohol-free lifestyle, eating nutritious foods, drinking filtered water, taking vitamins and minerals, and going to the gym.
Samuel also attended to his spiritual yearnings by joining the local Seventh-Day Adventist church and going to regular services.
After nearly eight weeks of outpatient therapy during which time he never experienced an alcohol relapse, Samuel stopped going to alcohol treatment and instead started going twice every week to local Alcoholics Anonymous meetings. Going to these meetings helped Samuel continue his alcohol-free lifestyle, they provided him with the support he needed, and they served as a steady reminder of the negative outcomes that are related to unhealthy drinking.
After going to AA meetings approximately five months Samuel felt that he was ready for a relationship and so he started going out with Carolyn, a young lady he met at church. It clearly amazed Samuel how much more ready he was for a dating relationship now that he had his hazardous and careless drinking under control. In actual fact it also surprised Samuel how much better life was now that he wasn’t under the control of his unhealthy drinking. Life was now rewarding and loaded with promise that he could have never yearned for or realized when he was engaged in abusive and hazardous drinking less than a year ago.
A Success Story That is a Tribute to the Importance of Alcohol Rehabilitation and the Power of Change
Samuel’s success story is a tribute to the relevance of alcohol therapy and the power of positive change. As Samuel thought about his newfound self worth and motivation for involving himself in healthy, worthwhile activities, he was actually appreciative that he decided to do something worth while about his careless and excessive drinking rather than giving into his depression and into the lure of his addiction. The result: he likes his new job responsibilities, he has more energy now compared with any time in his adult life, he is involved in a loving relationship, he is in command of his life rather than letting himself languish under the control of his alcohol addiction, and his life now has a positive direction.
