Do I Have OCD? And How Do I Find Out?

If you are having tendencies that boarder on the obsessive you might have to ask yourself, “Do I have OCD?” You are doing a good thing asking yourself this question and getting help for it before it ruins your life. Here are some examples of types of OCD behaviors that may require help from a professional.

People who have compulsions that are dirt and contamination related have unrealistic fears about contracting a fatal illness to the point that is affects their lifestyle. They are obsessed with cleaning and keeping things clean. This includes germs and the fear they may spread germs to others. They could also be obsessed with their body and are repulsed by bodily secretions and waste.

There is also an obsession with symmetry to the point of extreme. This can represent itself in the compulsive obsession to ensure that things are all in order and ‘just so’. This includes their personal way of dressing and also their home. There is an extreme urge that they cannot function or do anything else until this is accomplished.

Checking can also be an obsession. Driving around and around a corner because you saw something, afraid someone is hurt or constantly checking yourself for disease is a cause for concern. Being aware if fine, being obsessed with it is an issue.

Having a superstitious fear that you need to wash your hands twelve times, take a shower five times a day or the fear that nothing is ever clean are all cause for concern regarding an obsession. There are many more but these are just examples.

These are all signs of some types of OCD behaviors. If you identify to these extreme circumstances of OCD behavior then you might consider getting help. Note that these behaviors are at an extreme level that affects your quality of life. All of us has a little of these behaviors but when they are above and beyond then it is under the OCD category.

You can get help if you believe you have OCD. You can talk to your doctor or consider psychiatric therapy to determine what the underlying cause is to the OCD behavior. You can join a support group online and talk to others who suffer from the same condition. You are not alone and you can get help.
