Do You Forget This When Strengthening Your Cognitive Health?

In July 1968, John B. Calhoun, an American research psychologist, once carry out a very important research on the effect of open space on brain fitness. The experiment, surely, included rats, not people however his outcome were universally regarded to be a applicable. Here is what he did.

He arrange 4 pairs of rats into a utopian world. There were no predators, no shortage of food or drinks and of course, no inadequate of mating partner.

Basically these rats have anything they want – with the exception of space. At the beginning, every little thing looks just fine. The mouse lived as they should be. Their community grew promptly, doubling around every 55 days. Pretty soon, when the population of the rats reached 620, the space he was keeping them in become overflowing. This was day 315 of the test.

Amazingly, the number of mouse started to drop since then… to a point where the final surviving birth was at day 600. During this period of time, between day 315 to day 600, the rats behaved intermittently. No longer did males defend their domain and females. No longer do they occupy themselves in courtship or physical encounter. Instead they become anti-social, and groomed themselves.

As a result of their absence of scars and beautiful fur, these number of males were called “the pretty ones”. The females, on the contrary, became more offensive, stopped giving birth and get rid of their junior before weaning was complete. After day 600, the number of rats started to decline into extinction.

Seems familiar? Useless to say, these rats are extremely depressed during this period of time. Did the lack of space and advancing population density affecting your psychology? Who knows? Perhaps so, maybe not. Yet providing that you’re like me, you want to find out.

Try this out: At worst every week, go to an open space. Be it a meadow or out of city. Many people feel relieved, kind of a freedom feeling when in open space. I doubt even brain training exercises can yield such results.
