Generalized Anxiety Disorder Symptoms

Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) is an anxiety disorder where sufferers experience extreme worry about everyday issues.  For those people who suffer from GAD it will feel as though they are living on the edge all of the time.  They will always be in state of fear as they feel everything is a disaster waiting to happen and they don’t know how they could cope.  Their anxiety may be triggered by worries related to work, family, health or money.

Prolonged periods of anxiety inevitably lead to a variety of symptoms that may include tense muscles, insomnia, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, restlessness and feeling nauseous.  A formal diagnosis of GAD is normally made when a person has been suffering from anxiety related symptoms persistently for 6 months or more.  Anxiety disorders are very common and it is estimated that around 7 million people in the US suffer from GAD.

Many people who suffer from generalized anxiety will also feel depressed.  Sufferers must not mistake feeling depressed for depression.  Feeling depressed is a temporary response to feeling anxious whereas depression is a chronic condition.  Anxiety can mimic depression by disrupting the levels of the happiness hormone called serotonin that is produced by the brain.  The feeling of being depressed that is associated with GAD will subside when the anxiety levels decrease.

The physical and mental symptoms of generalized anxiety can cause a great deal of distress to those who suffer from it.  GAD can strike people regardless of their sex or age.  Generalized anxiety can often come about as a result of alcohol dependency.

The most effective form of treatment for GAD is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT).There are self help programs available that teach you to use Cognitive Behavioral techniques.  One such self help program is Panic Away by Joe Barry.
