Jigsaw Puzzles Are Back

Puzzles, in particular Jigsaw Puzzles, keep your mind active {and they help sharpen your spatial perception and memory}. The first Jigsaw Puzzle was made by John Spilsbury in 1766. He was a cartographer and engraver whose first jigsaw was a map of the world. Spilsbury pasted the chart to a piece of wood and cut out each country.

Afterwards, teachers started using Spilsbury’s puzzles to help students geography lessons by putting the world maps together. By the early turn of the 19th Century, Jigsaws were launched on the masses and became a full blown craze in the US.

The Challenge of the Puzzle

Years ago, jigsaw Puzzels were harder to try to make and solve. The puzzles were made in between color lines – one of the reasons being that the pieces were cut exactly between the color lines, so there were no pieces with two colors to show which parts fit where. And to make things worse the older Jigsaws didn’t even have a picture on them.

How Jigsaw Puzzels Came About

In 1885 jigsaws puzzles were given their name from the treadle saw, but actually they were cut by a fretsaw. Early in the 1900, most jigsaw puzzles were made of wood and cardboard.

Jigsaw Puzzles Craze

The puzzles craze began around 1920-1930 when companies like “Chad Valley” and “Victory” in the UK and “Einson Freeman”, “Viking” and others in the US started producing a wide range of affordable puzzles. In the modern era puzzles are created and reflected online in the computer world and you solve the puzzle using a mouse. Jigsaws Puzzels seem to still hold fascination with young and old alike.
