Keeping Things We Gather In Life ‘Cool’

Keeping things we gather in life ‘cool’ takes a bit of work and the realization that what we think might be cool will probably be decidedly uncool to certain others. However, as we move through our lives trying to gather as much stuff as we can, perhaps it’s better to have fun collecting meaningful and yet still cool things before just trying to gather the most stuff.

As an example, think about how many men or boys have lusted after something like an Ibanez electric guitar, with which they can stand in front of the mirror and imagine themselves to be one of the rock guitar greats. After all, the chances of them actually becoming so are exceedingly small, but the chances of them getting that well-appreciated guitar will be exceedingly large. That guitar will remain cool to them forever.

For the most part, when men enter into serious relationships and the question of children begins to be considered very seriously, it would be hard to find any of them that would consider something as prosaic as baby bath tubs to be something that would be seriously cool. However, go see that man after his child has been born and he’s washed him or her in that tub and ask them then if it is cool.

The point to much of this is that, once again, ‘cool’ is probably more in the eyes of the bolder than in the eyes of some style maven who is sitting in LA telling everybody what’s cool and what’s not. What this means is that taking pleasure in life’s little things, especially when in a relationship that’s meaningful and intense, can go quite a ways towards making just about anything cool.

Another good example of how to look at what ‘cool’ is might be to think about how cool a brand-new GE oven is to a couple who have been married for a year and who have worked hard during that whole time to get the money to afford one, especially if they’ve had a really old model prior to the arrival of the new one. Almost every couple, man and woman, would say that that stove is seriously cool.

Maybe a way of better explaining this is to understand how perspective works in our life. Something may be uncool to others but very cool to us because we’ve worked to inject a certain amount of emotional content into the item that we have worked so hard to get. This tends to make just about anything that we’ve worked get remain very memorable, though items that we’ve gotten relatively easily never seem to remain quite that cool.

Cool things that we gather throughout life, then, can be something as prosaic as stove or something that we’ve always fantasized about and which we think might take us to new and even cooler heights. Whatever these things happen to be, balancing them with intangible things like love of others and commitment to them, can intensify even more the gathering of cool things.
