Mentoring, Tutoring and Coaching Have Value for Children and Teens with Mental Health Difficulties.
There are a number of options that one can turn to in terms of support for mental health difficulties. Usually, a psychologist, therapist or psychiatrist is considered to be the most viable method of dealing with such disorders as bipolar disorder (BD), Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), ADHD, as well as depression. Also to be considered is education in self help, as well as procuring mentors, especially for children, tutoring, and for teenagers and adults, coaching.
Professional coaching can come in the form of Life Coaching, coaches who work specifically with persons with mental health difficulties, or ADHD/ADD Coaches, of which there are many. Coaches are generally certified by a professional organization, and can work along with one’s psychologist or treatment team. For some, however who may not feel comfortable with a psychologist or therapist, self-help when considered in conjunction with coaching is also an option that can be considered.
Professional coaches can provide practical help for persons to organize, to stay on target with their goals. Coaches can be accessible daily, briefly every day, or can be scheduled for sessions lasting an hour or more weekly, or both. A professional coach is generally less costly than a psychologist or therapist.
As in the case of any supportive arrangement, one has to find a coach with whom one “clicks with, that is you have to be on the same wave-length with your coach. So, carefully selecting one’s coach is of value.
Also to be considered for many children and teens is mentoring and tutoring. The support afforded by mentoring is something that BigBrother has been encouraing for decades, and it is of value. Mentors can also be found among teachers and peers, through Big Brother and similar organizations, or through some religious affiliations. Some organizations offer free one-on-one Bible study and this, in harmony with mentoring that may accompany the sessions, affords some opportunity to open up and discuss one’s past, if necessary, in a supportive format. Jillian* had been abused as a child, and finding the right mentor made all the difference. Within a matter of a couple of years, she had successfully overcome much of the difficulties of her past and was able to again focus in school, without the use of psychotropic medications, which had formerly been aggressively used in her treatment. There are many others who have had experiences very similar.
Additionally, for some children, having a tutor on a daily basis can be of much assistance, as it can a stabilizing influence for the child. Some children have made notable progress in their ability to concentrate in school with good support from outside sources.
We can can conclude, that there are options in considering support for mental health difficulties for both adults, teens and children. Many teens, especially, are helped through simple Interpersonal Therapy (IT), where they speak with a therapist or psychologist. This has helped many teenagers, without resorting to medicines, to overcome depression and other related problems. Coaching, mentoring and tutoring can be of help for some, as can education in lifestyle changes in self help.
