Sleep Panic Attacks And Their Causes

Panic attacks aren’t limited to occuring just during the day. Your sleep isn’t immune to panic attacks, and you might find yourself woken up by a pounding heart or sudden jolt.

Sleep panic attacks can be some of the most scary and feared of all panic attacks. Especially because they strike without warning, and can even start to affect your health.

Panic attacks aren’t really a condition. Panic attacks are actually symptoms of other stress and anxiety that has built up over time and not been dealt with. When you go through major life changes, stress and anxiety can build up. You might not have even had a panic attack during the day, and you might not even be aware of what’s causing the stress.

That stress that’s built up over time can start to impact your sleep. A panic attack feels like you’re having problems with your heart or breathing, but it’s really like a release valve for stress. Even more disconcerting is when that wakes you up from a full sleep.

Panic attacks don’t represent physical problems at first, but they can cause physical problems when not addressed. Once your sleep is abruptly disturbed by panic, it’s easy to become paralyzed with fear of another attack happening. You can start to think you have a serious medical condition.

That fear and worry can lead to keeping you awake at night, or other sleep disorders. All kinds of health problems can then be caused by insomnia, including headaches, weight gain and sore muscles.

The real underlying physical cause of sleep panic attacks isn’t known. Relieving the source of stress or learning to control the panic episodes is how you’ll eventually find relief from them.

Techniques, treatments and help is available to help you rid yourself of panic attacks, both from medical professionals and at-home study. Some of those treatments and techniques can also help cure sleep panic attacks as well. Medication or medical attention can also be used in the severest of cases. Just keep in mind that medication should be used temporarily until you can find the actual source of stress in your life.

Stress is the real cause, no matter how you find relief from the symptoms of panic attacks. To completely free yourself from panic attacks for good, you will have to address that source of stress in your life. After you do that, you’ll finally sleep soundly without being afraid of another episode.
