The Fear Of Rabies Is Very Real
Rabies and the fear of rabies can be a frightful thing, especially when one considers how truly agonizing the symptoms and eventual outcome of someone suffering from hydrophobia — which is the clinical term for rabies — will experience. As far as being fearful of the disease itself, the clinical term for this is hydrophobophobia. In some people, this fear of contracting rabies can be practically debilitating.
This fear of contracting the rabies virus or disease is but one of literally hundreds of phobias that have been identified by those working in the mental health field. For certain, it is a very real and definable condition that can create conditions of extreme terror in many cases. Some of this is due to how rabies has insinuated itself into the popular culture, and also how horrible it can be.
A still bigger reason why so many people become fearful of contracting rabies is that it is almost certain to kill them should they actually contracted. There is no cure for it once someone develops the symptoms, though there is a completely effective medication that is administered should someone be bitten by an animal infected with a virus. Still, the image of a mouth-foaming dog is hard to forget.
This sort of behavior has been popularized in numerous movies over the decades, including one that was screened back in 1983 and was about a large dog who was a beloved family member. This St. Bernard was bitten by a bat infected with the rabies virus and eventually became a violent killer. The fear of rabies, therefore, can be primal and visceral in many people due to the way it acts.
Certainly, there are a number of effective therapies that have been developed to help people deal with this phobia, but some can take years of concerted treatment. Fortunately, there have been certain recent advancements in treating this sort of phobia that can actually lead to it being eliminated or cured in a relatively shorter amount of time.
For those actually suffering from the fear of rabies, others need to know that it is a real phobia that can strike terror in the hearts of those afflicted by it. This is even though the chances of being afflicted by rabies itself are extremely remote. Fortunately, those who suffer from the phobia have treatments available to them that are effective and widely available.
