The Problems With Anger
It’s one of the most basic of human emotions. When someone does something that upsets us, we begin to feel stressed out and angry. In the days of cavemen, we could easily vent our anger by getting into a physical encounter. In modern day society, however, dealing with anger can be a tricky subject. Many people find that they don’t have a significant release from their anger, and they spend their time focusing on that anger. Anger can be a very unhealthy emotion to be exposed to over a long period of time, however, and in this article, we’ll do our best to fill you in on the negative effects that high levels of anger can have on your life.
If you have a case of intense anger that you don’t address, it can begin to manifest itself in other areas of your life. When angry for a long period of time, depression tends to set in, causing you to feel miserable because all that you can focus on are the negative aspects of your life. You may also become more disinterested in the activities that you regularly engage in, causing you to withdraw from the things that you love purely because you are upset about a problem that you are having. Many people who fall into periods of depression may attempt to self-medicate themselves with comfort foods, drugs, or alcohol, which can only aggravate the problem. There are many physical symptoms that one may experience when they are in a constant state of anger that can be very detrimental to the way that the body works. Studies have shown that blood pressure is heightened when an individual is angry, which can lead to serious health issues. Shortness of breath and heart palpitations may also occur. For all of the above reasons, it’s easy to tell why you should do all that you can to strengthen your anger management skills.
Some psychologists believe that depression is completely caused by cases of anger that are not sufficiently dealt with. If you find that you are angry all of the time over a particular problem or person, you should consider seeking help with your problem so that it doesn’t begin to consume your life. There are plenty of things that you can do on your own to help lessen your anger, but some people find that the best thing that they can do when it comes with anger is visiting a counselor or attending an anger management class. Talking to a counselor about the things that upset you can help you to put your problems into perspective. The counselor may be able to help you to brainstorm some ways that you can work towards dealing with the problems that you are experiencing, or they may help you to realize that you should let go some of the things that are angering you.
