What You Can Do About Chest Pain After Panic Attacks

Treating panic and anxiety attacks can be successful only if the patient knows his condition and accepts it.

Often, panic disorders are extremely disruptive. The good news is that panic disorders are highly treatable so if you have the condition, all is not lost; you can regain control of your life.

During a panic attack, the cardiovascular veins become stressed. The result is pain in the chest region once the attack subsides. Experiencing recurring feelings of fear and intense anxiety are the driving force behind panic disorders. Sometimes it may seem that without any warning and no evident ‘trigger’, fear can just manifest itself.

People who have panic disorders often complain about severe chest pain afterwards and this is caused by muscle tension. As the fear overwhelms you during the attack you will feel out of breath and your body will tense up causing more fear and increasing the severity of the panic. It is during this moment that the muscles in your chest walls contract. After the attack passes and you are able to put things, as well as your emotions, in proper perspective, your muscles relax, causing you to experience some chest pain.

The pain felt in the chest after a panic attack feels much like being bear-hugged by a bodybuilder. The pain is often sharp but flitting, but you may be sore for a few hours or even days after you have a panic attack. Severity of pain after an attack typically depends on intensity of the episode.

It is quite common to feel completely fatigued after an attack as your body and mind begin to become more relaxed.

The best thing to do next is to seek out the help of a medical practitioner in order to treat the chest pain.

Because a chest pain could mean there are a number of things potentially causing the pain in the patient, it is not uncommon for a doctor to misdiagnose a panic chest pain, so it’s extremely important that should you be in this situation you let your doctor know that you have a panic disorder and the chest pain could be as a result of a recent attack.

So if you experience chest pains and it could be caused by your panic attacks, don’t be embarrassed to talk to your doctor about your anxiety. Although a pain in the chest, even if severe, can be treated quite easily it is more important to get to the route of the problem actually causing the panic.
